Affiliations: Slash and several other inmates

EnemiesCharley, Daredevil (Matt Murdock), Richard Freedman, Mr. Fear (Alan Fagan)

Aliases: Mistress of Fear

Base of Operations: New York City, New York

First Appearance: Daredevil I#314 (March, 1993)

Powers/Abilities: Shock can generate terror in others via generation of a chemical similar to the "flight scent" pheromone generated by herd animals. She can also generate hatred and rage. Rather than just generating raw, primal fear like her predecessors, she actually causes her victims to see their greatest fear.

Via consumption of a certain potion, she transforms into a monstrous appearance, with razor sharp talons. She returns to normal by consumption of the same or another chemical (it wasn't clear). She did not appear able to generate the pheromone in her normal form.

History:
(Daredevil I#315 (fb) ) - Ariel is the illegitimate daughter of Alan Fagan, who used her mother for a good time and then left her behind, refusing to accept responsibility for her care.

(Daredevil I#315 (fb) - BTS ) - Cora raised Ariel on her own, burning the only family photo of Alan and training her from an early age to hate her father and to be better than him. Cora had to take a job at a poultry factory, during which time she was caught in a fire. Ariel dedicated herself to save money and take care of her mother. She began engaging in criminal activity and even engaged in prostitution.

(Daredevil I#314/315 (fb) ) - Learning her father was in prison, Ariel paid a prisoner, Slash, to get some of her father's skin for her. Slash paid off a guard named Charley and attacked Fagan in prison, soon delivering the skin to Ariel in the prison waiting room. Slash also gave Ariel a costume and mask he and his friends had designed in the prison. After receiving her father's skin, she had a chemist examine it and synthesize and rework the fear chemical which had impregnated it. Ariel then used the variant fear chemical and her new costume to transform into Shock, Mistress of Fear.

(Daredevil I#314) - Shock attacked civilians in New York City, stealing from them, including Richard Freedman, and using her gas to send people screaming. Daredevil discovered her actions and tracked the scent of the fear gas to Ariel, who again transformed into Shock. She used her powers to fill Daredevil with rage, and then she tackled him off the top of a building.

(Daredevil I#315) - Both Daredevil and Shock made it to the ground safely, where Shock then used her powers to terrorize the people on the streets, including young Charley and his mother. While Daredevil controlled the chaos she was causing, Shock fled, visiting her father in the hospital. Fagan's vital signs were initially weak, but Shock tormented him until his signs began to strengthen. Daredevil tracked her down again, and while she confronted him with images of being assaulted by Elektra, Daredevil managed to keep his wits about him. He forced her to consume another dose of the sample, returning her to normal so that she could be arrested. However, along the way, her hands returned to their taloned form, and she prepared to break free.
Meanwhile from his hospital bed, Fagan plotted revenge.

Charley

Richard Freedman

(Daredevil I#314) - Having stayed in New York City despite the warnings from his family, Richard Freedman was carrying jewels home from his supplier when Shock attacked him, administering fear gas, and left him sobbing about being alone as she made off with his valuables. Unable to see or hear anyone, Freedman went rushing through the city, bumping up against others. Daredevil (in a strange mask) comforted him, hearing about the robbery before going after Shock.

--Daredevil I#314

Slash

(Daredevil I#314 (fb) - BTS) - Ariel Tremmore began visiting prisoner Slash, or Slash-O, in jail. She brought him money for various tasks, and ordered him to pay off guards so he could assault another prisoner, Alan Fagan, taking some of his skin as Ariel had requested. Slash and his allies designed her a scary super-suit in the prison workshop.

(Daredevil I#314) - Slash assaulted Alan Fagan in prison, while guard Charley turned his back, having been paid off by Slash. Soon, Slash met with Ariel, telling her that the job was done while flirting with her. He gave her the costume, and she admitted that Fagan was her father.
