History: (Amazing Spider-Man I#375/3) - Jake Austin was pilot of a one-man shuttle carrying chemicals for space experimentation. During the countdown he noticed a fault in his number two engine, but before he could abort there was an explosion. The chemicals transformed him into a monster and he began attacking the base personnel. John Jameson used his strength against and eventually calmed him down. Austin was convinced to go with the ambulance men to get treatment for his condition.

Some of you may have noticed the strength level I've guestimated this guy at and thinking how did John Jameson fight him and survive? Well as I've said above Jake was disorientated and probably wasn't putting his all into his punches. Also John used Jake's own strength against him. He's definitely got a very high level of superhuman strength and durability to walk out of the burning wreck of a space shuttle and live! Indeed I often think that John Jameson must still have some dormant superhuman potential left from his time as Stargod/Man-Wolf.

"The Monster Within" was a back up story to the main Spider-Man story. It was a turning point in John Jameson's life as he decided to help people who had suffered from trauma's such as his own mutation into Man-Wolf. This decision would in turn lead to him working at Ravencroft. As for what happened to Austin next, it was never seen. I was hoping he would show up again in one of the Ravencroft stories.
