GROSGUMBEEKIANs

Classification: Eztra-terrestrial sentient quadrupeds

Location/Base of Operations: Planet Grosgumbeek

Known Members: Duntumbla, Huyenneyuh (deceased), Startanious, unnamed elder (deceased)

Affiliations: Makkari (trained under Huyenneyuh, source of annoyance to others), Runner (attempted to recruit them for his Galactic Marathon)

First Appearance: Quasar#47 (June, 1993)

Powers/Abilities: The Grosgumbeekians are highly adapted for great speed. They can easily travel faster than the speed of sound (770mph), and by accessing tachyon tunnels, they are not even constrained by the speed of light (186,000 miles/sec). They have no technology that has been seen.

Traits: The Grosgumbeekians are a peaceful race, delighting in the simple pleasures of life, and the joys of running. They see as competition and a desire to be the best as unattractive and unpleasant. Elderly Grosgumbeekians may undergo senility, but when their time of death approaches, they take one last run, until they collapse into death.

They appear to exist in a tribal or familial society.

History: Little is known of the Grosgumbeekians, other than they have made no effort to develop technology. There ultra-speed is well known throught the galaxy. Milennia ago, the Elder of the Universe, the Runner, came to Grosgumbeek to recruit some racers for his Galactic Marathon. None of the natives had any desire to compete, so they declined, but the Runner left behind a box which could transport them to the starting line if they ever changed their mind.

In modern years, the Eternal of Earth, Makkari, sought to improve his already prodigious speed. During his adventures with Quasar, he encountered the Mourners, who directed him to Grosgumbeek. Makkari first encountered an elderly native on his Death Run. Shortly after that, Makkari encountered another elderly native, Huyenneyuh, who agreed to train him in the secrets of ultra-speed. Makkari excelled under his training, rapidly learning to achieve trans-light speeds. When Huyenneyuh's time came, he told Makkari of the box left by the Runner, and bade him to run the Galactic Marathon in his place. Makkari agreed to the challenge, and left after Huyenneyuh's death. His children, Duntumbla and Startanious, revealed that their father was senile, that his desire to race was aberrant, and that Makkari's competitive spirit was offensive to them.
